What this really comes down to is assumptions. You assumed that no answer meant yes, other person assumed no answer meant no.

You rolled need based on your assumption, other person rolled need in an attempt to contest you based on his assumption. In this situation, no matter who won the roll, someone would have thought the other was a ninja looter.

My rule in pugs is simple; there are no rules, You roll how you want, I roll how I want and there is no such thing as ninja looting.
